Our September Hen of the Month
– Dolly –
Our gorgeous Olive Egger girls have a wide range of physical attributes. Dolly is one of our “chocolate chip” girls, meaning she is pure white with black spots or black “leakage” as it is sometimes called. She has a pea-type comb or a “modified pea comb” which is one of my favorite combs on a chicken as it looks like a wavy piece of ribbon or perhaps a line of pretty piped frosting. Dolly is an F9 Olive Egger or 9th generation of her breeding line. She lays a very dark olive green egg with a few small speckles.
In general, our Olive Eggers aren’t the friendliest birds but it’s because they just love being chickens. They make excellent foragers and will spend hours rummaging through the woods for tasty bugs and fresh Spring shoots to eat. Their foraging habits and abilities make their eggs some of the tastiest and richest we’ve ever had. Of course, most of their eggs are used for hatching rather than eating, because they don’t typically lay eggs every day. Each hen lays an egg approximately every 48 hours which also makes the shells of their eggs extra dark.
